As a parent, the quest for a good night’s sleep can feel like an elusive dream, especially when your little one is struggling to settle into a healthy sleep routine. I want to share my personal experience with sleep training my son and how the cry-it-out method has proven to be an effective tool in helping us all get the rest we need. While sleep training approaches may vary, the cry-it-out method has worked wonders for our family, fostering better sleep patterns and promoting overall well-being. Not only did we get more sleep, but our little man also did as well, and luckily for us, it only took about two nights of intermittent crying for our boy to sleep more.

The cry-it-out method, also known as controlled crying or graduated extinction, involves allowing your child to self-soothe and fall asleep independently. It involves setting a bedtime routine, putting your baby down drowsy but awake (which we figured out was not a good idea), and giving them the opportunity to self-soothe through brief periods of crying. The premise behind this approach is that babies learn to self-regulate and develop healthy sleep habits over time.

Sleep deprivation can take a toll on both parents and children. For our family, the constant nighttime wakings and the struggle to get our son back to sleep were exhausting. We were even sleeping at different times so one of us could hold him while he slept in our arms. When my wife went back to work, this quickly became unsustainable. We knew we needed to take action to establish a healthy sleep routine for everyone’s well-being. After careful research and discussions with our pediatrician, we decided to try the cry-it-out method.

The first few nights were undoubtedly challenging. We followed a consistent bedtime routine, ensuring our son was comfortable, fed, and ready for sleep. We then realized that the “drowsy but awake” line is a total sham! Once we started putting him down already asleep, he woke up in the middle of the night much less often.

As expected, there were tears and protests. It was heart-wrenching to hear our little one cry, but we knew it was crucial for his long-term sleep habits. We provided reassurance by periodically checking on him, offering soothing words and gentle touch, but resisted the urge to pick him up. With each night, the crying gradually decreased, and our son began to settle into a more restful sleep routine.

Contrary to the initial concerns we had, the cry-it-out method proved to be a turning point for our family’s sleep routine. Our son started to fall asleep more quickly and slept for longer stretches during the night. We noticed improvements in his overall mood and behavior during the day, as he became well-rested and more alert.

Additionally, the cry-it-out method also empowered us as parents. It helped us recognize the importance of setting boundaries and encouraging our child’s independence. By giving him the opportunity to self-soothe and learn to fall asleep on his own, we were fostering essential life skills that would benefit him in the long run.

Sleep training is a personal journey, and the cry it out method may not be suitable for every family. However, for us, it was a game-changer. While it was difficult to hear our son cry initially, we knew that teaching him healthy sleep habits was a gift that would benefit him for years to come. Through the cry it out method, we found a newfound balance in our family’s sleep routine, experiencing the joy of restful nights and more energetic, contented days.
